Aiden Milligan is a painter who lives and works in Edinburgh. Milligan’s consciously naïve style brings humour and lightness to retellings of his experiences of growing up in rural Southwest Scotland.
In this new series, the composition tends to accentuate the position of the observer, partly alert and always amused - one who has come to experience the absurdity of adult disenchantments with tenderness.
Milligan says of "The Last Convict on Ailsa Craig":
Ailsa Craig has been a refuge of smugglers, pirates, Catholics during the Reformation, and even held prisoners in the past. Translated from Scottish Gaelic roughly as ‘Fairy Rock’, it is also known as ‘Paddy’s Milestone’, and can be viewed in the sea both from Scotland and Ireland. The scene is as isolated as the rock in the sea, and imagines the last of a group of people who have populated what is now a bird and sea life sanctuary. The hermitic nature of the man takes joy in his relationship with the neighbouring seals.
